I usually just build websites. But this time, I tried something different — making a game with nothing but JavaScript and TypeScript.
The idea? 👉 https://playanycardgame.com
A game where you can literally create any card game you can imagine, just by typing the rules.
This project has been a crazy challenge. As a web developer, I’m used to building fast, functional apps. But with game dev? You have to think about feedback loops, fun, and user experience in a totally different way. And since I didn’t use Unity, Unreal, or Godot, I had to build my own game engine from scratch in TypeScript. Thousands of lines of logic, endless testing, and lots of lessons learned.
In this video, I’ll walk you through:
The differences between web dev & game dev mindsets
Why making a game engine in JavaScript/TypeScript is so hard
The biggest challenges (and surprises) I faced
What I’d recommend if you’re a web developer curious about making games
